Heavy rain and strong winds expected in FIVE provinces

Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

The South African Weather Service has issued a heatwave advisory, warning that persistently high temperatures are expected across the country. In contrast, disruptive weather is also forecast in five provinces, with heavy downpours, hail and strong winds that may lead to flooding.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Severe thunderstorms resulting in localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, large amounts of small hail, and localised damage to infrastructure due to damaging winds expected over the central and western parts of Free State and North West, eastern and south-eastern Northern Cape, extreme western parts of Eastern Cape, and north-eastern Western Cape.

B. Yellow Level 1 Warning: Severe thunderstorms resulting in localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, large amounts of small hail, and localised damage to infrastructure due to damaging winds expected over western and southern KwaZulu-Natal.

ADVISORIES

A. A Heat Wave with persistently high temperatures is expected in places over most parts of the Eastern Cape.

B. Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions along the wild coast of the Eastern Cape.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect morning fog patches in the extreme east, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Low

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect morning fog patches along the escarpment and Highveld, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, morning fog patches along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect morning fog patches in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the east.

Free State

In Free State, morning fog patches in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the east.

Northern Cape

The day will start with morning fog patches along the north coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the west. The wind along the coast will be light north-westerly.

Western Cape

Morning fog patches in the north-west, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, except in the west. The wind along the coast will be fresh south-easterly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Partly cloudy to cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly.

The Eastern half: The day will start cool in places in the north, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in places in the south-west. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly.

KwaZulu-Natal

Morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the southern-central and western parts. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Low
