Ghana’s Audit Service Recovers Over GH¢18 Billion, Blocks GH¢11.7 Billion in Wrongful Payments
Ghana’s Audit Service has recovered more than GH¢18 billion of public money that was lost or misused between 2022 and 2026, and in 2025 alone it stopped GH¢11.7 billion from being paid out wrongly. Auditor-General Dr. Pamela Graham announced the figures in a report covered by GHOneTV on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. In simple terms, the Audit Service says it has clawed back a huge amount of state money and also stopped billions more from disappearing before it left government accounts.
The recovery of over GH¢18 billion covers money the state had lost through questionable deals, overpayments, and other financial leaks over the four-year period. Dr. Graham said the Audit Service had also prevented GH¢11.7 billion in wrongful payments in 2025 alone. That means the office caught the errors and stopped the payments before public funds went out the door.
The Auditor-General said the results show that regular auditing and follow-up checks are paying off. By checking government accounts and flagging suspicious payments early, her office has helped protect funds that would otherwise have been lost. She noted that preventing wrongful payments saves the country as much as recovering lost money does.
The report comes as Ghanaians continue to demand more openness in how public money is spent. The Audit Service’s work is seen as a key check on government spending, and the latest figures give the public a clearer picture of how much money was saved or recovered. Dr. Graham said her office would keep up its checks and follow up on its recommendations.
The Auditor-General’s office has urged public institutions to act quickly on audit findings and to tighten their internal controls so that public funds are not lost in the first place. The Service also encouraged citizens and the media to keep asking questions about how state money is used. Dr. Graham said the Audit Service will keep publishing its findings so the public can follow how public money is being protected.
