2,000MW Nuclear Plant a Major Step Towards Ghana’s Energy Independence – ASEC
The Executive Director of the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC), Ing. Justice Ohene-Akoto, has welcomed Ghana’s plan to develop a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant, describing the initiative as a strategic step towards diversifying the country’s energy mix and strengthening long-term energy security.
Ohene-Akoto believes the proposed facility could play an important role in meeting Ghana’s growing electricity demand while providing reliable power to support industrialization and economic development.
His comments follow the announcement that Russia has agreed to work with Ghana towards establishing the 2,000MW nuclear facility after bilateral discussions between President John Dramani Mahama and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow.
The proposed project is expected to expand Ghana’s electricity generation capacity and reduce the country’s dependence on its existing sources of power, including thermal and hydroelectric generation.
Nuclear energy is widely regarded as a reliable source of large-scale electricity generation because it can provide continuous power regardless of weather conditions. Its development could therefore help Ghana establish a more balanced and resilient energy system.
The initiative also revives the nuclear energy vision of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who initiated preparations for nuclear development in the 1960s before the project was interrupted following the 1966 coup.
However, the proposed 2,000MW project will require substantial investment, technical expertise, regulatory oversight and strong safety arrangements.
Ohene-Akoto’s endorsement highlights the importance of nuclear energy in Ghana’s long-term development strategy, as the country explores opportunities to secure dependable electricity for households, businesses and major industries.
No construction timetable, financing arrangement or specific reactor technology has yet been publicly announced.
