Joana Quaye Breaks Silence With Fresh Account Of Alleged Abuse During Marriage

Joana Quaye, the former wife of Ghanaian businessman Richard Nii Armah Quaye, has spoken publicly about what she describes as physical abuse during their marriage, recounting incidents in which she was allegedly beaten with a belt.

In a video circulating on social media, Joana described how disagreements with her former husband sometimes escalated into physical violence.

“It gets to a point where he hits me. Sometimes, he uses a belt to beat me whenever I do something he doesn’t like,” she said.

Her account has brought renewed attention to the allegations of domestic abuse that emerged during the former couple’s highly publicised divorce dispute.

In April 2026, Joana’s legal team disclosed that she had lodged a formal complaint with the Ghana Police Service on December 9, 2025, alleging repeated physical abuse over a period of about 11 years. The allegations outlined by her lawyers included claims of slapping, punching, kicking and whipping with a belt.

The lawyers also said the complaint had been referred to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), which had commenced investigations. They subsequently wrote to the Inspector-General of Police seeking an update on the progress of the case.

The allegations were strongly rejected by Quaye when he addressed the controversy in an interview on The Delay Show in April. He insisted that he had never physically assaulted his former wife and questioned the authenticity and interpretation of a video that had circulated online.

“I can’t even beat my children, not to even beat my wife. I have never beaten my wife before,” he said during the interview.

The businessman also argued that the footage being circulated did not show him and accused unnamed individuals of pursuing an agenda against him.

Beyond the abuse allegations, the former couple have been involved in a legal dispute over the terms of their divorce and the division of marital assets. Joana’s lawyers have indicated that an appeal was filed against the High Court’s January 2026 orders.

Joana’s latest public account adds another dimension to a dispute that has attracted considerable attention in Ghana. However, the allegations remain matters for the relevant authorities and courts to examine, and Quaye has denied them.
