CAF Reportedly Approves Essipong Stadium to Host International Matches

Ghana’s football authorities could have another important venue available for international matches following reports that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved the Sekondi Sports Stadium, popularly known as Essipong Stadium, to host international football fixtures.

The reported development is welcome news for Ghanaian football, particularly as the country continues to explore suitable venues for hosting Black Stars matches and other international competitions.

According to information circulating from sources within Ghana football, CAF has reportedly given the stadium the green light to stage international matches. The approval could provide the Ghana Football Association (GFA) with another option when selecting venues for upcoming national team assignments.

Interestingly, sections of GFA members are reportedly pushing for Ghana’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Somalia to be played at the Essipong Stadium.

The proposal could see the Black Stars return to the Western Region for an important international assignment, giving supporters in Sekondi-Takoradi and surrounding communities an opportunity to watch the national team on home soil.

For many Ghanaian football supporters, the possibility of hosting the Black Stars at Essipong would be significant. The stadium has a history of hosting football activities, but its availability for major international fixtures has been a subject of interest, particularly amid discussions about the condition and suitability of football facilities across the country.

Having another CAF-approved venue would also give the GFA greater flexibility when organising international matches. Rather than depending heavily on a limited number of stadiums, Ghana could potentially distribute national team fixtures across different regions.

However, although the reported CAF approval is encouraging, the final decision on where the Black Stars will play their qualifier against Somalia remains important. The GFA will have to consider the suitability of the venue, logistical arrangements, security and other matchday requirements before making an official announcement.

The proposed venue would also offer an opportunity to strengthen football engagement in the Western Region, where supporters have consistently shown interest in watching the national team.

For now, attention will be on whether the Ghana Football Association accepts the proposal to stage the Somalia encounter at Essipong Stadium.

If the reports are confirmed and the venue is eventually selected, it would represent an important development for football infrastructure and the distribution of international matches in Ghana.

Ghanaian supporters will therefore be watching closely for an official confirmation from the GFA and CAF regarding the stadium’s approval and the possible venue for the upcoming qualifier.
