Trouble Deepens for Sammy Gyamfi as Afenyo-Markin’s Lawyers Confirm Court Service

Lawyers representing Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin have maintained that GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi has been properly served with a defamation writ filed against him at the Accra High Court.

The lawsuit, filed on October 24, 2026, stems from comments Gyamfi allegedly made on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme, where he reportedly described Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist”. The dispute comes amid public disagreements between the two over GoldBod’s operations and reported losses associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Afenyo-Markin’s legal team, Dehyena Chambers, explained that Gyamfi had initially instructed his solicitors, Ayine & Partners, to accept service of the court documents. The arrangement was communicated to the court in writing on August 26, and a bailiff subsequently delivered the writ to the firm.

However, the lawyers alleged that the documents were later returned to the court registry after Gyamfi reportedly withdrew his authorisation. They argued that the initial delivery remained legally effective under the applicable court rules.

Afenyo-Markin is demanding damages, a public retraction and apology, as well as an injunction preventing further publication of the statements. The court will determine the competing claims, and the service of the writ does not establish liability on Gyamfi’s part.
