NDC’s 24-Hour Economy Is Now 24-Hour Galamsey – Mining Day And Night

Former Executive Director of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, Kingsley Ofosu Ntiamoah, has taken a swipe at the NDC government over its failure to stop illegal mining.

According to him, the NDC’s much talked about 24-hour economy policy has now become a 24-hour galamsey operation.

He said illegal mining activities are now taking place morning, afternoon, and night under the watch of the current government.

Speaking on the state of the country, Kingsley Ofosu Ntiamoah said the NDC promised to end galamsey within months when they were in opposition. They made Ghanaians believe that the NPP government was not serious about the fight.

But almost two years in power, the situation has become worse.

“Galamsey has more than tripled under this government,” he noted, echoing concerns already raised by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Bawumia himself recently mocked the 24-hour economy idea, saying “Maybe when they mentioned 1:3:3 they meant galamsey because galamsey has now more than tripled.”

Ofosu Ntiamoah said rivers are still being destroyed, forest reserves are being invaded, and young people are dying in galamsey pits. He cited the recent incident at Manso Kaniago in the Ashanti Region where at least seven illegal miners died after a pit collapsed.

He described the Mahama-led NDC government as inconsistent and unprincipled, because what they promised in opposition is not what they are doing in power.

He said the NDC promised one job, three shifts, three people under its 24-hour economy to create jobs for the youth. But instead of jobs in factories, what Ghanaians are seeing is a 24-hour demolition and 24-hour illegal mining.

“The 24-hour economy they promised has become a 24-hour galamsey economy. Morning, afternoon, night, they are digging for gold and destroying our water bodies,” Ofosu Ntiamoah stressed.

He called on the government to be honest with Ghanaians and take real action to stop galamsey, instead of playing politics with it.
