I harbor no ill feelings toward Luis Suarez

Former Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he harbors no resentment toward Luis Suarez over the infamous 2010 World Cup quarterfinal incident.

Gyan was at the center of one of the tournament’s most dramatic moments when Ghana faced Uruguay in South Africa. With the match tied 1-1 in the final minutes, Suarez blocked a header from Dominic Adiyah with his hands, preventing a potential winning goal.

Suarez was sent off, and Ghana was awarded a penalty—but Gyan’s spot-kick hit the crossbar. After extra time, Ghana fell 4-2 in the resulting penalty shootout, ending their historic run just short of the semifinals.

In a recent interview with Rio Ferdinand, Gyan reflected on the moment, saying, “I always say I would have done the same thing that Luis Suarez did because he did that to save his nation.

“Seeing the ball going into your net at that crucial moment, he just did that to save his nation, but then I have forgiven him,” he added.

Ghana’s 2010 campaign remains one of their most memorable, reaching the quarterfinals after advancing from a group featuring Serbia, Australia, and Germany, and defeating the USA 2-1 after extra time in the Round of 16.

The Black Stars are set to return to the World Cup this summer, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia, Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and closing the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Following group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, the Black Stars will be looking to make a stronger impact in North America.
