Beirut Cocaine Bust Triggers Fresh Attack on Mahama as Nana B Demands Accountability
The Second National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s administration over what he describes as its failure to effectively address cocaine trafficking and other drug-related activities in Ghana.
Nana Boakye argued that the repeated seizure of narcotic substances linked to Ghana points to a growing national security concern and threatens the country’s international reputation.
In a Facebook post on Monday, November 2, 2026, the NPP executive expressed concern over the frequency of cocaine interceptions involving shipments originating from Ghana, warning that the situation could undermine the country’s security and credibility.
To highlight the extent of the problem, he referenced several major drug seizures recorded between March 2025 and October 2026.
According to his figures, Ghana recorded 14 significant cocaine and other narcotics seizures within the period, with the estimated street value of cocaine intercepted outside the country ranging between US$1.3 billion and US$1.7 billion.
He indicated that seven of the seizures occurred within Ghana, involving approximately 3.6 tonnes of cocaine, while five international operations accounted for about 14 tonnes.
Among the incidents he highlighted was the seizure of nearly 4,500 kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in a timber shipment originating from Ghana at the Port of Amsterdam in June 2025.
He also cited the November 2025 interception of 2,829 kilogrammes of cocaine hidden in a consignment of cassava flour shipped from Tema to Antwerp, Belgium. Another 1,158 kilogrammes were reportedly seized at the same port in December 2025.
In September 2026, French authorities intercepted approximately 3.9 tonnes of cocaine concealed in a shipping container declared to contain plastic waste at the Port of Dunkirk.
Nana Boakye further referred to the arrest of a Syrian national in Beirut, Lebanon, on October 31, 2026, after the suspect allegedly arrived from Ghana with 46.7 kilogrammes of cocaine.
He stressed that the country’s drug-trafficking concerns extend beyond cocaine, pointing to the seizure of 320 kilogrammes of illicit substances concealed in a charcoal shipment from Ghana to Australia in April 2026.
He also mentioned the arrest of a South African national at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg in September 2026 after arriving from Accra with heroin.
The NPP executive questioned why the Mahama administration had not taken disciplinary action against officials in security agencies and institutions responsible for preventing drug trafficking, despite the series of reported seizures.
He accused the government of failing to demonstrate accountability and allowing Ghana’s international image to be increasingly associated with cocaine trafficking.
Nana Boakye also alleged that the administration had not shown sufficient commitment to combating cocaine and other illicit drug activities.
His criticism follows the recent arrest of a Syrian national in Lebanon who reportedly travelled from Ghana and was allegedly found in possession of 46.7 kilogrammes of cocaine.
