Mila wants you to finally speak the language you grew up hearing

A new language-learning app is making it easier to learn Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and Nigerian Pidgin, one swipe at a time.

Imagine growing up in a Nigerian household, understanding almost everything your parents say in Igbo or Yoruba, but somehow never learning to speak it yourself.

Or growing up in Lagos, hearing three different languages every day, yet only being able to hold a conversation in English.

It’s a surprisingly common experience. And for a lot of people, learning their native language has been sitting on the to-do list for years.

Mila is a new language-learning app that makes learning feel a little less like studying and a lot more like scrolling through TikTok.

Instead of long lectures and complicated textbooks, users swipe through short lessons covering everyday words, phrases and conversations. You can listen to native speakers, slow down the audio, tap on words to understand their meanings, and practice speaking out loud.

The app uses AI to help learners improve their pronunciation, while daily streaks, XP, challenges and progress tracking make it easier to build a habit.

Think TikTok meets Duolingo, but for languages that have largely been left out of mainstream language-learning apps.

Mila currently supports Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and Nigerian Pidgin, with plans to introduce Punjabi and several other languages.

And it seems people are excited about it.

Since Mila started reaching early users, people have taken to social media to share their experiences, talk about the app, and express excitement about finally having something like this.

On X, users including @emeneks, @pamilerin, and @thekenndubisi have shared posts about Mila.

For an app still in its early days, seeing people discover it and start conversations around it has been encouraging.

“We didn’t want to put a textbook on a phone and call it innovation,” said the Mila team. “People already spend hours scrolling through short videos every day. We wanted to take something that feels that natural and use it to help people learn a language.”

But Mila isn’t just for Nigerians or people trying to reconnect with their roots.

It’s also for the Canadian learning Yoruba because their partner speaks it, the American preparing for a trip to Nigeria, or someone in London who has simply always wanted to learn Igbo.

You don’t need to have grown up hearing the language. You can start from zero.

One thing Mila takes seriously is getting the languages right.

Lessons use native-speaker audio, and content goes through native-speaker review before being published. That matters particularly for tonal languages like Igbo and Yoruba, where saying a word slightly differently can change its meaning entirely.

The team is also working to improve the speech technology behind the app, particularly for languages that existing AI systems don’t always understand very well.

For now, though, the goal is simple: make learning a language something people actually look forward to doing.

Five minutes while waiting for coffee. A few phrases on the train. A quick lesson before bed.

And maybe, eventually, the next time Grandma asks you something in Igbo, you’ll finally answer her in Igbo.

Mila is available on Android, with iPhone users currently testing the app through Apple’s TestFlight program.

Mila is a mobile language-learning app that combines TikTok-style short lessons, Duolingo-style gamification, AI-powered speaking practice and native-speaker-reviewed content. Starting with Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and Nigerian Pidgin, Mila is building a simpler, more enjoyable way for anyone to learn languages that have been underserved by mainstream learning platforms.

Mila (מילה) means “word” in Hebrew.
