BREAKING: Governor Sakaja Dumps UDA, Reveals Next Move in Major Blow to Ruto
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has formally left President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to join the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sakaja disclosed the move on Monday, November 2, at a media briefing held at ODM’s headquarters, Chungwa House, in Lavington, Nairobi. His decision arrives as politicians across the country are realigning ahead of the coming polls.
The governor’s switch follows several weeks of rumors about his political future, with ODM leaders and supporters repeatedly urging him to join their ranks.
On Saturday, October 31, Sakaja attended a commemorative event for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Jacaranda Grounds. There, he asked Nairobi residents if he should move to ODM, stay in UDA, or go to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
His questions elicited responses from ODM supporters, who encouraged him to cross over to their side.
Sakaja also indicated he was prepared to serve under the party’s leadership, telling top ODM officials he was ready to take their direction.
The governor had earlier revealed that ODM officials and supporters had approached him about a potential political partnership.Speaking on August 26, 2026, Sakaja acknowledged that a number of party members had urged him to abandon UDA and join them.
Although he did not declare an immediate decision then, his remarks heightened speculation that he was planning to switch political loyalties.
His newest announcement now confirms his exit from the governing party.
Nevertheless, Sakaja’s arrival in ODM could spark rivalry for the party’s Nairobi governor ticket in the 2027 polls.
Makadara MP George Aladwa has also surfaced as a potential aspirant for the same seat, raising the possibility of an internal showdown between the two politicians.
ODM leaders have insisted that those seeking the party’s tickets must contest in democratic primaries and should not anticipate automatic nominations.
Sakaja won the Nairobi governorship in August 2022 on a UDA ticket after beating Jubilee candidate Polycarp Igathe.
His latest political maneuver represents a major change of allegiance and could redraw the race for Nairobi’s top seat in 2027.
