Inusah Fuseini to Mahama: Reject a Third-Term Bid Even If Supreme Court Approves It

Former Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Inusah Fuseini, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to reject any attempt to seek a third presidential term, even if the Supreme Court of Ghana were to rule that such a move is constitutionally permissible.

Fuseini’s comments come amid discussions surrounding presidential term limits and the constitutional provisions governing the eligibility of individuals to serve as president of Ghana.

The former legislator believes that Mahama should not consider pursuing another term beyond the constitutionally recognised limit, regardless of any possible legal interpretation that could emerge from the Supreme Court.

According to Fuseini, the president should demonstrate respect for Ghana’s democratic principles and the spirit of the country’s constitutional arrangements by refusing to entertain a third-term ambition.

His position places emphasis on the importance of respecting constitutional conventions and protecting the country’s democratic institutions, particularly regarding the transfer of political power and presidential tenure.

Ghana’s 1992 Constitution provides for a maximum of two terms for an elected president, with each term lasting four years. The constitutional framework is intended to prevent the concentration of executive power and ensure regular democratic transitions.

Mahama has previously served as president and returned to office following his victory in the December 2024 general elections. His political history has therefore brought renewed attention to questions surrounding presidential eligibility and the interpretation of the two-term limit.

Fuseini’s intervention suggests that the issue should not be approached purely from a legal standpoint but should also consider the broader democratic principles that underpin Ghana’s political system.

He believes that even if a favourable Supreme Court interpretation were to emerge, Mahama should personally reject the idea of seeking another term in office.

The former MP’s remarks are likely to generate further political discussion, particularly among supporters and critics of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

However, his comments do not represent a Supreme Court ruling or an indication that such a third-term bid has been legally approved.

As discussions continue, the debate is expected to place renewed focus on presidential term limits, constitutional interpretation and the importance of preserving Ghana’s democratic traditions.
