If You Do 9% Of GHC100bn, That Becomes Ghc9bn In Additional Burden – Duncan Amoah Sepaks

The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Duncan Amoah, has drawn attention to the financial consequences of the 9 per cent salary increment for public sector workers.

In an interview reported by Citi FM on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Amoah explained that a 9 per cent increase on a public sector wage bill of GH¢100 billion would require an additional GH¢9 billion from the government.

He said the calculation showed the significant financial commitment involved in implementing the salary adjustment and highlighted the need for careful management of public funds.

Despite recognising the cost of the increase, Amoah maintained that public sector employees deserved a higher adjustment than the one agreed upon.

He acknowledged that the increment could provide some financial relief but questioned whether it would adequately address the economic challenges confronting workers.

Amoah also emphasised that the government must consider its other financial obligations while making decisions about workers’ salaries. He noted that improving employee welfare should go hand in hand with responsible management of national resources.

His position has added to the debate over public sector remuneration, particularly the need to establish sustainable wage policies that consider workers’ living standards, government revenue and the country’s broader economic conditions.
