Prepare for Changing Weather Patterns as Met Dept Predicts 5-Day Heavy Rains Over These Areas

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a five-day weather forecast warning of rainfall and thunderstorms across several parts of the country, with daytime temperatures expected to reach 37°C in some northern areas between October 30 and November 3, 2026.

The forecast, issued on October 28, indicates that light to moderate rainfall will affect different regions, with some counties expected to experience afternoon showers accompanied by thunder and lightning. Temperatures will also vary significantly, with some highland areas recording cold nights.

Morning rains accompanied by afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley.

The affected counties include West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Baringo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira.

Residents in these areas should prepare for changing afternoon conditions, particularly in counties where thunderstorms are expected on several days during the forecast period.

Cold and cloudy conditions with morning rains giving rise to sunny intervals are expected over the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County. The forecast covers Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi and Embu, with showers expected at different times of the day. Nairobi is also included in the wider forecast, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible.

In the South Eastern Lowlands, Kitui, Machakos and Makueni are expected to experience varying conditions, including morning rainfall and afternoon showers. Some areas may also receive moderate showers during the period.

Along the Coast, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Taita-Taveta are expected to experience a mix of light showers and sunny intervals.

In northern and arid regions, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo and Turkana will experience varying conditions, with Turkana recording the highest forecast daytime temperatures of up to 37°C.

KMD has also forecast night-time minimum temperatures as low as 8°C in Nyandarua, making the highlands considerably colder than northern areas.

Residents are encouraged to monitor daily weather updates and plan their activities accordingly, particularly during periods of afternoon thunderstorms and rainfall.
