“Talanta Stadium Is Ours”: Boniface Mwangi Questions Ruto’s Plans to Pay Foreign Teams
Activist Boniface Mwangi has criticised the proposed plan to invite Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam for the official opening of Talanta Stadium, questioning the use of public funds to pay foreign football clubs while Kenyan players continue facing financial challenges.
In his statement, Mwangi argued that the government should prioritise local footballers and invest in grassroots talent instead of spending millions of shillings to bring international teams to Kenya for an exhibition match.
Mwangi claimed that Talanta Stadium was initially budgeted at KSh 35 billion but eventually cost KSh 45.85 billion, representing an additional KSh 10.85 billion. He questioned the increase and called for greater transparency regarding the project’s expenditure.
To support his argument, the activist compared the stadium’s reported cost with that of the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé in Ivory Coast, which hosted the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. He stated that the facility cost approximately KSh 33 billion.
The proposed appearance fees have also raised concerns for Mwangi. He claimed that Bayern Munich and Ajax could each receive between KSh 250 million and KSh 300 million, excluding travel, accommodation, security and other related expenses.
He contrasted the proposed spending with reports of Harambee Stars players going on strike over unpaid allowances of approximately KSh 80,000 per player, arguing that Kenyan football deserves greater financial support.
Mwangi suggested inviting African national teams, including Senegal, or neighbouring East African countries instead. Alternatively, he proposed a week-long tournament featuring young footballers from all 47 counties, with prize money of at least KSh 5 million.
The activist also announced plans to have his lawyer file a Freedom of Information request seeking details of the proposed exhibition match’s full cost. He warned that he could pursue legal action if the government proceeded with what he considers wasteful expenditure.
Mwangi further made serious allegations concerning police killings under President William Ruto’s administration. Those claims require independent verification and should not be treated as established findings without supporting evidence.
The debate raises questions about public spending, accountability and opportunities for Kenyan athletes. What are your views on the proposed stadium opening match? Share your remarks and comments in the comment section.
