Woman Reveals Painful Last Words of Relative Trapped Under Eastleigh Building Rubble

A woman whose relative is believed to be trapped under the rubble of the collapsed Eastleigh building says she managed to speak to him by phone hours after the disaster, and he was still alive.

Aisha Dawe Jilo, who lives on 10th Street in the Ninth District, rushed to the scene soon after the building came down at about 1:09 pm on Friday.

Speaking to TV47 Kenya, she said several people are still unaccounted for. They include a young woman named Fate, who ran a shop on the ground floor, and a young man whose uncle was standing beside Aisha as she spoke.

Aisha said she first reached her relative at around 1:47 pm and spoke to him again at about 3:07 pm. Both times, he was alive. His message was simple and urgent: get help fast.

When the reporter asked if she could call him again during the live broadcast to check on him, she agreed immediately.

She said the family alerted their inspector, Nur, who acted quickly and contacted the relevant government offices. By the time she addressed the cameras, Kenya Red Cross teams and police officers were already at the scene.

Even in her distress, Aisha thanked those who had turned up to help, saying the government had been supporting them and that the family appreciated it. She also acknowledged the journalists covering the story.

Her words carried both pain and calm. “We leave everything in God’s hands,” she said, adding that the family prays those still alive will be rescued safely, and that anyone who has died will be recovered with dignity.

Families at the site are now waiting for an update from the Nairobi governor, expected within the hour, which should bring clearer details on casualties.
