Theresa Tetteh

The Ledzokuku Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Theresa Tetteh, has advised counsellors in schools to maintain confidentiality when discussing sensitive issues with their students during counselling sessions.

This, according to her, would not only build the trust of the children in them but would also help in resolving mental, social and other issues confronting the children while they continue with their education.

Mrs. Tetteh announced this on Monday during the launching of this year’s Guidance and Counselling week for the Ledzokuku Municipality in the Greater Accra Region.

The week-long event involves a walk through some principal streets of Teshie, in-school counselling, a career conference, mentoring and coaching by various professionals, among other events.

The mission of the counselling unit is to ensure every student feels understood and supported through life’s complexities.

The Municipal Director urged the learners to always engage their counsellors to discuss issues when confronted by challenges instead of listening to their peers who might give them wrong information.

The Ledzokuku Municipal Guidance and Counselling Officer, Mrs. Charity Willie-Doe, in her welcome address, assured the learners that they should trust their counsellors at all times to ensure that they get the best support from them.

She reminded the learners to be conscious of what they read or watch on social media since not all the information on the internet is good for their consumption.

The Guidance and Counselling officer reminded parents to also ensure that they provide the basic needs of their children to ensure that they feel safe and happy to be in school.

She appealed to all counsellors to avail themselves for their students and others to approach them to discuss issues affecting their mental and emotional health before it escalates into an uncontrollable challenge.

“It is true that you work as professional counsellors, there is a need for you to also have time for yourselves by relaxing to contain any stress and any challenges before you also become a victim of emotional and mental health,” she said.
