President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a $250 million float glass manufacturing project in Shama, describing it as clear proof that Ghana’s industrial resurgence is underway.
Speaking at a ceremony that combined the sod-cutting for the new float glass facility, the commissioning of a sanitary ware factory, and the inauguration of Phase Five of a ceramic tile production line, he said the developments signal a decisive shift from import dependence to export-led industrial growth.
“This is a statement that Ghana is no longer content to remain an import-driven economy,” President Mahama declared. “We are determined to produce, process, manufacture and export.”
The float glass plant will produce 600 tonnes per day under Phase One and 800 tonnes under Phase Two, bringing total capacity to 1,400 tonnes daily. At full scale, the facility is projected to generate nearly $100 million annually in export earnings.
“In 2024 alone, Ghana imported over 65,000 tonnes of glass valued at almost $25 million,” he noted. “This factory will change that equation — reducing imports, saving foreign exchange and positioning Ghana as a regional exporter.”
The president also highlighted the expansion of the ceramic tile factory, which now produces 200,000 square metres daily and exports about 60 percent of its output to more than 20 countries.
On revenue impact, he revealed that the company behind the investment paid 740 million Ghana cedis in taxes in 2025 alone, with projections exceeding one billion cedis annually from next year.
“That revenue is what builds our schools, our hospitals and our roads,” he said.
President Mahama further announced duty- and tax-free incentives on capital equipment for factories operating under the 24-hour economy initiative to encourage expansion and retooling.
“These are not abstract statistics,” he stressed. “They are signals that Ghana is stable, predictable and open for business.”
The projects are expected to create more than 2,000 direct jobs, alongside thousands of indirect employment opportunities, with structured skills transfer programmes to ensure Ghanaian professionals assume greater leadership roles.
Invoking the vision of Kwame Nkrumah, President Mahama emphasised: “Production and exports are what build a strong economy and a strong currency.”
He officially declared the float glass project commenced and the new factory expansions operational, describing the moment as “a symbol of Ghana’s industrial comeback.”
