Police in Arua City, West Nile, have detained two women on allegations of practising homosexuality, contrary to Section 2(1)(2) of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, after they were reportedly seen kissing in public.
Wendy Faith, a 22-year-old dancer and Alesi Diana Denise, 21, and unemployed, were arrested on February 18, 2026, at Alengo cell, Pokea ward, Ayivu West Division.
According to police, the women had been living in one room since February 12, 2026, and were seen kissing openly in public.
According to the West Nile police spokesperson, Josephine Angucia, the community members reported to police that the two young women had been seen involved in “queer and unusual acts” and that many other women would often gather at their residence.
“It’s alleged that both suspects have been living together in one room at Alengo cell from February 12, 2026, to February 18, 2026, when they were arrested on allegations of practicing Homosexuality. Information was received from the community that the suspects have been involved in queer and unusual acts believed to be sexual in nature, besides being allegedly seen openly kissing each other in broad daylight.
It’s further alleged that photos were taken to that effect, and that many ladies normally congregate to stay at the suspects’ residence. It is upon that information that police acted by arresting the two under the allegation of practicing Homosexuality, C/S 2(1)(2) of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023,” said Ms Angucia.
According to the police publicist, “The scene of the crime was visited and documented, a search was conducted at the premises of the suspects but nothing was recovered. The suspects were interviewed, and their statements were attached. They were examined on Police Form 3A”.
They are currently detained at Ayivu West Division.
Section 2(1) and (2) of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 in Uganda criminalises the offence of homosexuality, stipulating that a person who commits the act is liable for conviction and, upon sentencing, faces up to life imprisonment. This section specifically targets sexual acts between persons of the same biological sex.
The Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023, significantly expanded Uganda’s existing criminalisation of same-sex relations. While it does not criminalise identifying as LGBTQ+, it imposes severe penalties for consensual sexual acts, “promotion,” and “aggravated” offences.
