RIP: Teacher and Husband Found Dead in Suspected Murder-Suicide Buried as Conflicting Details Emerge
Grief engulfed Segerot village in Chepalungu Constituency, Bomet County, on Tuesday as Joseph Kipkorir Kirui and his wife, Viola Cherotich Kirui, were laid to rest amid unanswered questions surrounding their deaths.
The couple was buried at their family home in an emotional ceremony attended by relatives, colleagues, local leaders and members of the community who gathered to pay their last respects.
Joseph, a nurse at Longisa County Referral Hospital, and Viola, a primary school teacher, died on October 8 following an alleged domestic dispute.
Their deaths ended a 21-year marriage and left their three children without either parent.
During the burial, relatives struggled to understand what had led to the tragedy, saying the couple had shown no obvious signs of trouble shortly before their deaths.
Their parents recalled that Joseph and Viola had appeared cheerful and had travelled together to Bomet town before returning home.
This account differed from reports that the couple had faced domestic disagreements for several years.
Postmortem findings reportedly showed that Viola may have been injected with a poisonous substance, while signs of strangulation were also noted on her neck. Police suspect Joseph killed his wife before taking his own life.
Beyond the emotional loss, the burial highlighted the difficult future facing the couple’s three children, who must now navigate life without their parents.
Relatives and community members expressed concern about their education, upbringing and financial needs.
Mourners appealed to the Bomet County government, local leaders and well-wishers to support the children, noting that the family faced financial challenges.
Governor Hillary Barchok called on couples experiencing domestic disagreements to seek professional counselling and support from relatives, friends and colleagues before conflicts escalate.
Officials of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) also expressed concern over deaths linked to gender-based violence, murder and femicide. They called for stronger efforts to address domestic violence and encourage affected families to seek timely assistance.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain ongoing.
