Mama Ida Reveals How She Received Tragic News of Raila’s Death And Who Informed Her
Mama Ida Odinga has emotionally recounted how she received the heartbreaking news of her husband Raila Odinga’s death, revealing that it was their daughter, Winnie Odinga, who eventually informed her that they had lost him.
Speaking during an interview, Ida recalled trying to reach her sister-in-law Ruth Odinga before deciding to call Winnie, who was also at the scene when Raila’s condition deteriorated.
“I could not get Ruth, so I called Winnie, who was also there, and Winnie told me he was taking a walk and he collapsed, but they are trying to resuscitate him,” Ida narrated.
She said Winnie informed her that Raila was being taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with medical personnel making desperate efforts to revive him.
“She said they were taking him to ICU, and they were trying to resuscitate him, but I’ll keep you informed,” Ida recalled.
However, just 10 minutes later, Winnie called again with the devastating update that would change Ida’s life forever.
“Ten minutes later, Winnie calls me and tells me, ‘We’ve lost the battle.’ She said Dad is gone, and that is how I received the news. It was not easy,” she said.
Ida’s account offers a deeply personal glimpse into the painful moments surrounding the death of the veteran opposition leader, whose passing left his family, friends and supporters mourning across the country.
