New Fuel Prices In Kenya After EPRA Announced Sharp Increase, Details

Kenyan motorists and households will pay more for fuel after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced sharp increases in pump prices, with super petrol rising by KSh12.93 per litre and kerosene recording the largest adjustment.

In its latest review announced on Wednesday, October 14, EPRA increased the price of diesel by KSh9.90 per litre, while kerosene rose by approximately KSh28.49. The new prices take effect at midnight.

In Nairobi, super petrol will retail at KSh226.96 per litre, diesel at KSh227.76 and kerosene at KSh219.87.

EPRA Director General Edward Kinyua attributed the increases to rising international petroleum prices, following a significant increase in the cost of imported fuel in September 2026.

According to the authority, the average landed cost of super petrol increased by 11.81 per cent, from US$874.26 per cubic metre in August to US$977.55 in September.

Diesel recorded an 11.32 per cent increase, with its landed cost rising from US$957.05 to US$1,065.38 per cubic metre. Kerosene costs increased by 9.41 per cent, from US$1,003.87 to US$1,098.31 over the same period.

The price adjustments are expected to increase transport expenses and put additional pressure on household budgets as businesses contend with higher operating costs.

The government has maintained tax relief measures to cushion consumers against rising petroleum prices. Value-added tax on super petrol, diesel and kerosene was reduced from 16 per cent to eight per cent in April 2026, with the relief extended until January 14, 2027.

The Petroleum Development Levy Fund has also been used to stabilise prices, with KSh29.4 billion spent during the 2025/26 financial year.

Kinyua warned that the approaching Northern Hemisphere winter could push international fuel prices higher as demand for diesel and kerosene increases.

He also said the kerosene price adjustment was partly intended to narrow the price difference between kerosene and motor fuels, which had encouraged the illegal mixing of petroleum products.

The latest review comes as Kenya continues exploring measures to strengthen energy security and reduce exposure to fluctuations in global petroleum markets.
