Birmingham City defender Godfred Boakye has completed a loan move to Azerbaijan Premier League leaders Sabah FK for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

The Belgian-born Ghanaian center-back, who has been a standout performer for the Blues’ development squad, arrives in Baku to bolster Sabah’s defensive options as they chase a historic domestic title.

The deal includes an option for the Azerbaijani side to make the transfer permanent at the end of the campaign, signaling a potential long-term departure from St. Andrew’s for the 20-year-old prospect.

Boakye joins Sabah at a critical juncture in their season, with the club currently sitting at the top of the table. Their primary obstacle remains the perennial champions, Qarabağ FK, who have dominated Azerbaijani football by claiming nine of the last ten league titles.

The move offers Boakye his most high-profile challenge to date following previous developmental loan spells at Inter Turku in Finland and Bromsgrove Sporting. Birmingham City officials indicated that the move is designed to provide the physical 1.93m defender with consistent top-flight experience in a high-pressure title race.

The transfer reflects Sabah FK’s strategy of integrating young European-based talent to disrupt the established hierarchy of the Azerbaijan Premier League.
