Bad News to Ichung’wah as Latest Opinion Poll Shows Him Trailing in the Parliamentary Race

A new opinion poll by Swiss Poll International has placed Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah behind his main challenger, Stephen Kigathi, in the contest for the Kikuyu parliamentary seat ahead of the 2027 General Election. The findings suggest that Ichung’wah could face a difficult re-election campaign as political competition continues to grow in the Mt Kenya region.

The survey, released on Monday, October 12, 2026, indicates that Kionywe is leading the race with 44.9 per cent support, representing 1,601 votes. Ichung’wah follows in second place with 23.1 per cent, equivalent to 791 votes, while Owen Ndungu ranks third with 17.6 per cent, having secured 628 votes.

Samuel Kuria occupies fourth position with 4.0 per cent support, translating to 142 votes. Wakili Muchanga Kiragu follows with 3.6 per cent, representing 130 votes. Meanwhile, 6.8 per cent of respondents have yet to decide which candidate they would support in the upcoming election.

According to the information provided alongside the findings, the survey involved 3,563 respondents. It has a reported margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points and a confidence level of 95 per cent. However, the results represent respondents’ stated preferences at the time of the survey and do not necessarily determine the final outcome of the 2027 parliamentary contest.

Kionywe’s position in the poll could attract further attention because of his reported political association with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He is expected to pursue the Kikuyu parliamentary seat under the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), potentially setting up a contest against Ichung’wah, who is expected to defend his seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

The emerging figures could intensify political discussions within Kikuyu Constituency, where the competition for parliamentary representation is already drawing attention ahead of the next general election. Ichung’wah’s reported second-place position presents a challenge for the incumbent, although there is still considerable time for candidates to strengthen their campaigns, engage voters and build political alliances.

With the 2027 General Election approaching, the contest is expected to remain closely watched as aspirants position themselves and parties seek to consolidate their support across the Mt Kenya region. Further polling and campaign developments may provide a clearer picture of the candidates’ standing as the election draws nearer.
