The much-anticipated 2026 Argungu International Fishing Festival at Mata fada has officially commenced at the historic fishing arena in Argungu town, Kebbi State, drawing thousands of fishermen, tourists and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.

Excitement reached a fever pitch on Saturday when large numbers of the expected 40,000 fishermen, unable to wait for the formal opening ceremony and the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, surged into the river just minutes after noon.

The spontaneous start stunned spectators who had gathered as early as 7:00am to witness what is regarded as one of Africa’s most iconic cultural festivals.

Correspondents at the venue reported that security operatives were temporarily overwhelmed by the sheer size and enthusiasm of the crowd, as participants rushed into the water clutching their traditional fishing tools in a dramatic display of skill, strength and endurance.

The Argungu Fishing Festival, which dates back to 1934, is a centuries-old tradition originally introduced to mark peace between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom. Over the decades.

it has evolved into an international cultural spectacle, showcasing fishing competitions, traditional music and dance, wrestling, arts and crafts, while also promoting tourism and local commerce.

The festival is widely seen as a symbol of unity, cultural pride and economic opportunity for the host community.

It attracts visitors from different parts of the world and serves as a platform for projecting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

This year’s edition is expected to feature high-profile dignitaries, cultural troupes and increased security presence, as authorities work to ensure safety and order following the dramatic opening moments.

Meanwhile, after about 30 minutes the security men attached to the venue have successfully taken control of the situation by dragging the fishermen away from the river.
