Political Blow to ODM as Another Leader Dumps the Party for MDG Amid Escalating Internal Wrangles
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has suffered another significant political setback after Teso North Member of Parliament Oku Kaunya officially abandoned the party and joined the MDG Party , in a development that could further complicate Oburu Odinga’s efforts to consolidate the party’s political influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kaunya’s dramatic political departure comes against the backdrop of persistent internal disagreements within ODM, particularly in Busia County, where unresolved party disputes have continued to expose deep divisions among influential political players.
Explaining his decision, the legislator reportedly accused Governor Paul Otuoma of contributing to the escalating political wrangles, signalling growing dissatisfaction with the party’s internal leadership and conflict-resolution mechanisms.
In an even more consequential development, Kaunya announced his appointment as MDG Deputy Party Leader, immediately elevating his political status within his new political outfit.
His defection could provide MDG with an additional foothold in the Western Kenya political landscape while dealing another blow to ODM’s attempts to maintain its traditional political strongholds.
The latest development has triggered fresh conversations about the mounting challenges confronting ODM under Oburu Odinga’s leadership. Political observers and supporters have increasingly questioned whether the party can contain its internal disagreements as prominent leaders begin exploring alternative political formations.
The development also comes amid wider concerns over ODM’s political stability, following reports of disruptions at the Jacaranda rally involving a section of the party’s leadership and Governor Ole Lenku’s reported decision to leave the party and establish his own political outfit.
With another elected legislator now exiting its ranks, ODM faces an increasingly complicated political equation. Kaunya’s departure raises serious questions about the party’s ability to manage internal dissent, retain influential leaders and preserve its political dominance as the country gradually approaches the 2027 electoral showdown.
