Meet Winnie Adipo, The Kenyan Woman Who Rose To Staff Sergeant In US Air Force

Kenyan-born Winnie Adipo has turned repeated disappointment into an inspiring success story after rising through the ranks to become a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force, years after failing four times to join the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Adipo’s childhood dream was to serve in the military, an ambition she pursued through several attempts to secure recruitment into the KDF. However, all four attempts ended unsuccessfully, threatening to derail her lifelong aspiration.

She alleges that corruption and nepotism influenced the recruitment process, claiming that during her fourth attempt, a recruiter demanded KSh200,000 to facilitate her recruitment.Coming from a modest family, Adipo said she could not afford the amount demanded.

Her father worked as an agricultural teacher in a high school, while her mother was a nurse. The family did not have the financial means to meet the recruiter’s alleged demand.

“The recruiter told me, ‘Give me 200,000 shillings and I’ll fix you in.’ I just didn’t have that sort of pocket money and just like that, my dream was gone,” she recalled.

Despite the disappointment, Adipo did not completely abandon her ambition of serving in the military. An unexpected opportunity eventually emerged when she relocated to the United States in 2015 through the Diversity Visa Programme. After settling in America, she pursued her military dream by enlisting in the United States Air Force.

She specialised in Health Services Management, a field that combines military service with healthcare administration and management.Through discipline, commitment and hard work, Adipo successfully completed her military training and began building her career in the US military.

Her dedication saw her earn an early promotion before steadily advancing through the ranks to become a Staff Sergeant.Today, her story stands as an example of perseverance and determination, particularly for young Kenyans whose ambitions face setbacks.

From failing four KDF recruitment attempts to earning a position in the United States Air Force, Adipo’s journey demonstrates that one setback does not necessarily mark the end of a dream.
