Kisumu Woman Nearly Killed At Funeral For Saying Wantam

A Kisumu woman almost lost her life for speaking her mind. Her name is Linda Ogweno. She wants to become the Kisumu Woman Representative. On Mashujaa Day, she went to a funeral in Nyamasaria, Kisumu County.

She stayed there for almost eight hours. When it was her turn to speak, she said she supports Wantam. Wantam means one term for the president. But many leaders before her had shouted Tutam, which means two terms. That small difference caused big trouble. At around 6pm, as she was leaving Nyamasaria Primary School, a crowd ran towards her. Some had machetes in their hands. She fell on her knees and begged for her life.

She shouted, Please don’t beat me, please don’t kill me. Some good people helped her and pulled her back to safety. She says life is now very hard for women in Kisumu politics today. If you disagree, you can be attacked. But Linda says she will not stop.

She wants to fight corruption, help GBV survivors, and create jobs for youth. Politics should never really be a death trap.
