Tinubu: “I Sincerely Hope This Visit Will Inspire You To Travel To The Remaining 33 States–Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide a detailed account of the funds reportedly saved through the removal of petrol subsidy, as well as the loans secured by his administration since assuming office in 2023.

Obi specifically questioned the whereabouts and utilisation of the ₦15.8 trillion said to have been saved from subsidy removal. He also demanded explanations regarding more than $100 billion in loans reportedly obtained by the Federal Government during Tinubu’s administration.

The former Anambra State governor made the demands in a statement published on his verified X account on Saturday, November 7, 2026, according to a report by Daily Post. He used the statement to raise concerns about public spending, government revenue and the need for greater transparency in the management of national resources.

Obi’s comments followed Tinubu’s decision to spend a night in Akwa Ibom State, away from the usual presidential engagements in Lagos and Abuja. While acknowledging the President’s visit, the NDC candidate urged him to make similar trips to other parts of the country and engage directly with citizens.

He suggested that such visits would give Tinubu an opportunity to listen to the concerns of Nigerians, understand the difficulties confronting different communities and explain what his administration had achieved since coming into power.

However, Obi stressed that the President’s engagements with residents should go beyond ceremonial visits. He argued that Nigerians also deserved clear answers about how the government’s financial resources had been managed and what tangible benefits had resulted from the policies introduced by the administration.

Among the issues he raised was the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly generated as savings following the removal of the petrol subsidy. Obi called on Tinubu to explain how the money had been spent and identify the projects or programmes that had benefited from the funds.

He also questioned the utilisation of the more than $100 billion in loans allegedly secured by the government since 2023, insisting that citizens should be informed about how the borrowed funds had been deployed.

Beyond subsidy savings and external borrowing, Obi drew attention to the increased revenue generated through taxation. He argued that the additional funds collected from Nigerians should also be accounted for, particularly as the administration had announced that government revenue exceeded its target in the previous year.

According to the former governor, the government should provide a comprehensive explanation covering its various sources of income, the funds obtained through borrowing and the savings recorded after the removal of petrol subsidy.

Obi maintained that announcing higher revenues and increased financial resources was not enough without demonstrating how those funds had improved the lives of ordinary citizens. He said Nigerians needed to see how government spending had translated into better living conditions and improvements in essential sectors.

He further linked his demand for financial accountability to the economic difficulties facing households and businesses, arguing that citizens had a legitimate interest in knowing how public funds were being managed, especially amid the effects of government economic policies.

Addressing Tinubu directly, Obi expressed hope that the President’s visit to Akwa Ibom would encourage him to travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation, spend time with residents and explain the administration’s performance.

In his statement, he said, “I sincerely hope this visit will inspire you to travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation, spend time with the people and, more importantly, explain what your administration has done with the N15.8 trillion saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, the over $100 billion you have borrowed, the increased revenues accruing to the government from taxing Nigerians, and the additional government revenues which your administration celebrated last year as having surpassed its target.”
