CBK Reveals Shilling’s Position After Kenya Loses KSh 5.3 Billion in Forex Reserves
The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has highlighted the performance of the Kenyan shilling after the country’s foreign exchange reserves recorded a decline of KSh 5.3 billion.
In its latest financial update, the regulator reported that the local currency remained stable against major international and regional currencies, maintaining its position against the US dollar.
According to the CBK’s Weekly Bulletin released on Friday, November 6, the shilling exchanged at KSh 129.96 against the US dollar on November 5, the same rate recorded on October 29.
The stability comes as the country’s foreign exchange reserves remain under close monitoring amid changing economic conditions and demand for foreign currency.
The CBK reported that reserves stood at USD 14.699 billion, equivalent to 5.9 months of import cover, as of November 5. This remains above the statutory minimum of four months of import cover required by the regulator.
Foreign exchange reserves play an important role in supporting Kenya’s external payments, including government obligations and imports. They also provide a financial cushion against external economic pressures that could affect the local currency.
The shilling’s performance is closely watched by businesses, importers, exporters and Kenyans who depend on foreign currencies for transactions.
A stable exchange rate helps businesses plan their operations and reduces uncertainty when dealing with international payments. However, movements in reserves remain an important indicator of the country’s external financial position.
The CBK continues to monitor developments in the foreign exchange market while maintaining its focus on stability and adequate reserve levels.
The latest figures provide an update on the shilling’s position as Kenya navigates changing financial conditions and international market developments.
