“Akufo-Addo Started It, We Approved It” – Mahama Acknowledges NPP Government Over Ghana’s BRICS Bid

“Akufo-Addo Started It, We Approved It” – Mahama Acknowledges NPP Government Over Ghana’s BRICS Bid

According to a report by GHOne TV on Saturday, November 7, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged the efforts of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration in initiating Ghana’s bid to establish a partnership with the BRICS group.

President Mahama made this statement while discussing Ghana’s relationship with the BRICS bloc and the steps taken by the previous and current governments to strengthen the country’s international partnerships.

According to the President, the Akufo-Addo-led administration deserves recognition for taking the initial steps towards Ghana’s BRICS partnership bid. He explained that although the initiative started under the previous government, the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration carefully reviewed the proposal before approving it.

President Mahama stressed that his government was prepared to acknowledge good initiatives introduced by previous administrations rather than abandon them simply because they were started by a different political party.

He indicated that the NDC government saw the importance of the initiative and decided to support it after reviewing the proposal. This, according to him, demonstrates the government’s willingness to continue policies and programmes that are considered beneficial to Ghana’s national interests.

The President’s comments have drawn attention because political parties in Ghana often disagree over policies introduced by their opponents. His acknowledgment of the previous administration’s role has therefore highlighted the importance of continuity in governance.

The BRICS group, which includes major emerging economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, provides a platform for member countries and partners to strengthen economic cooperation, trade, investment and diplomatic relations.

Ghana’s interest in developing ties with the group is seen as an opportunity to expand its international economic relationships and explore new avenues for development.

President Mahama’s statement has also reinforced the need for successive governments to build on meaningful initiatives introduced by their predecessors for the benefit of the country.
