Asiedu Nketiah Makes History As He Becomes First Chairman Of African Political Parties Initiative

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been elected the first Chairman of the African Political Parties Initiative (APPI), TV3 Ghana reported on November 7, 2026.

He assumed the role after his election at the African Political Parties Summit 2026, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The appointment places him at the head of an initiative seeking to strengthen collaboration among political parties and encourage discussions on Africa’s future.

During his acceptance speech, Asiedu Nketiah expressed appreciation to the political parties that supported his election. He also recognised the Africa Governance Centre for creating the initiative to promote cooperation and dialogue among political organisations on the continent.

He noted that political parties should not focus solely on electoral victories. Instead, they must also help develop capable future leaders and contribute to effective governance.

Addressing Africa’s future, he urged political leaders to prepare for developments in technology, industry, job creation, energy and education. He also called for stronger political institutions, better leadership development programmes and increased representation of women and young people in decision-making.

Asiedu Nketiah warned against discontinuing national development projects whenever a new government takes office. He argued that progress requires consistent long-term strategies and cooperation across political administrations.

He also drew attention to the proposed APPI Agenda 2040, which is expected to outline a long-term vision for strengthening political institutions and equipping the next generation of African leaders.

He ended his address with a call for political parties throughout Africa to work together to establish resilient institutions that can respond to the aspirations of future generations.
