Kofi Wayo Dies at 71
Ghanaian politician and businessman Charles Eric Kofi Wayo, popularly known as Kofi Wayo or “Chuck”, has reportedly died at the age of 71.
The outspoken politician is said to have passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Nyaho Clinic in Accra. He was reportedly residing in the East Legon area of the capital before his death.
News of his passing has drawn attention to the life and political journey of a man who became widely known for his unconventional views, outspoken commentary and criticism of successive governments in Ghana.
Although the circumstances surrounding his death have been reported, the cause of death has not been officially disclosed. Funeral arrangements were also yet to be announced by his family at the time of reporting.
Kofi Wayo was a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, having been associated with different political movements during his career.
He initially became involved with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and contested the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat on the party’s ticket during the 2000 general elections. However, he lost the contest to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Dr Mustapha Ahmed.
Following his dissatisfaction with the NPP, Wayo later moved to the People’s National Convention (PNC), where he contested for the party’s presidential nomination in 2004.
He subsequently established the United Renaissance Party (URP), serving as its founder and leader. Through the party, he sought to introduce what he considered an alternative political direction for Ghana.
Despite not securing a major electoral victory, Kofi Wayo remained a recognisable personality in the country’s political landscape, frequently expressing strong opinions about governance, leadership and national development.
His political journey also brought him into contact with different administrations. In 2009, following the NDC’s victory in the 2008 general elections, he was appointed by President John Evans Atta Mills to serve on the board of the Energy Commission.
Beyond politics, Wayo was also involved in business and agriculture. In 2017, he announced his intention to leave active politics and concentrate on farming, including efforts to support rural farmers.
His decision marked a shift from the political activities that had defined much of his public life.
Kofi Wayo was particularly known for his willingness to criticise both the NPP and NDC, often challenging politicians and questioning decisions by successive governments.
His outspoken personality and unconventional political positions made him a subject of public discussion, even when his views differed from those of mainstream political actors.
He also spent several years in the United States before returning to Ghana, where he continued his business and political activities.
His death marks the passing of a distinctive figure in Ghana’s political history, remembered for his independent-minded approach, controversial opinions and involvement in efforts to offer an alternative to the country’s dominant political parties.
As tributes and reactions emerge, attention is expected to turn to his family’s announcement regarding funeral arrangements and further details surrounding his death.
