MK Party Supporters Allegedly Prevent People Of Somali From Casting Their Votes
Tensions have reportedly escalated outside Durban Girls High School in KwaZulu-Natal during South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections, following allegations that supporters of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party attempted to prevent people of Somali descent from accessing a voting station.
According to reports from the scene, MK Party supporters confronted individuals of Somali descent who were attempting to approach the voting station located at the school. The confrontation allegedly became heated, with claims that the individuals were stopped from proceeding towards the voting area.
The incident attracted the attention of members of the public and raised concerns about possible clashes as South Africans continued participating in the local government elections. The situation has also renewed discussions about immigration, undocumented foreign nationals and demands for stricter enforcement of the country’s immigration laws.
South African electoral legislation makes it clear that only eligible South African citizens who meet the necessary registration requirements are entitled to vote in local government elections. Foreign nationals, regardless of their immigration status, are not eligible to participate in the electoral process.
However, determining voter eligibility is exclusively the responsibility of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and its authorised officials. Political party supporters have no authority to independently decide who should or should not be allowed to vote.
The allegations have therefore raised questions about electoral conduct and the responsibility of political parties to ensure their supporters respect democratic processes. Any eligible voter who is intimidated, threatened or unlawfully prevented from accessing a voting station could be a victim of electoral interference.
Meanwhile, police and electoral officials are expected to maintain order and ensure that voting stations remain safe and accessible throughout the election period.
It remains unclear what triggered the confrontation, whether any arrests have been made or whether the IEC has formally intervened. Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and prevent further escalation.
