EFF Suffers Major Support Decline in South Africa’s Major Cities
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have reportedly suffered significant electoral setbacks across several major South African cities following the latest local government elections, with the party losing support in predominantly Black voting areas.
The reported figures indicate that some of the party’s biggest declines occurred in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, raising questions about its changing political fortunes in major urban centres.
In eThekwini, the EFF reportedly experienced its steepest drop, losing 14 percentage points to secure just 2% of the vote. Its performance in Ekurhuleni also weakened considerably, falling by 11 percentage points to approximately 8%.
The party recorded further declines in Tshwane, where it obtained 8% after losing nine percentage points, while its support in Johannesburg dropped to 10%, representing a six-point decrease.
In Buffalo City, the EFF reportedly secured 8%, down seven percentage points.
Other major municipalities also reflected a similar trend. The party received approximately 11% in Cape Town and Mangaung, while its support in Nelson Mandela Bay stood at 9%.
The reported results suggest that the EFF faces growing challenges in retaining its urban voter base as South Africa’s political landscape continues to shift.
