JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 6 NOVEMBER 2026
An interesting story from Kaizer Chiefs’ past has resurfaced after former fitness coach Elsa Storm recalled a memorable incident involving Kaizer Motaung Jr during one of the club’s demanding training sessions.
Storm, who previously worked with several notable figures in South African football, revealed how Motaung Jr displayed remarkable determination during a physically challenging session supervised by former Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral.
Ertugral was widely known for his demanding training methods, which often involved intense running exercises designed to test players’ physical fitness and mental strength.
According to Storm, running under the Turkish coach was not always intended to improve players’ match fitness. At times, it also served as a form of punishment.
“In Muhsin’s world, running for the sake of running meant punishment. And there we were, just running,” Storm recalled in an article published by Algo Sports.
However, what started as an ordinary but exhausting training session soon became a worrying situation when the weather suddenly deteriorated.
Storm explained that heavy rainfall and lightning began while the players were still running. Concerned about their safety, she decided that continuing the exercise was too dangerous and advised everyone to look for shelter.
She recalled that Motaung Jr eventually stopped running, with rain pouring down his face, before making a surprising statement.
“There was lightning and pouring rain. I told the guys it was getting dangerous and we should find shelter. Kaizer Junior stopped, his face soaking wet,” she explained.
Storm then revealed the unforgettable response she received from Motaung Jr.
“Els, we will rather get killed here together by lightning than telling that coach we not running.”
His response demonstrated just how seriously the players took Ertugral’s expectations and the kind of pressure they experienced during training.
Motaung Jr has since moved into football administration and currently occupies the position of Sporting Director at Kaizer Chiefs, where he is involved in the club’s football operations and overall sporting direction.
For Amakhosi supporters, Storm’s revelation provides an entertaining look into the club’s past, particularly the demanding environment that shaped some of the personalities who remain connected to the team today.
The story also highlights the lasting impression Ertugral’s coaching methods left on those who worked with him at Naturena.
Although the incident may sound amusing when viewed years later, Storm’s reaction serves as a reminder that player welfare should always come first, especially when dangerous weather conditions make training unsafe.
