MP Wamumbi Celebrates Tarmacking of Road Leading to Gachagua’s Home, Thanks President Ruto

Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi has expressed excitement about the ongoing tarmacking works on a section of the Muthua-Kiawarigi-Kabiru-ini road, which leads to the Wamunyoro home of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Wamumbi posted photos on Facebook on Tuesday showing workers and rollers laying asphalt on the road. He described the stretch as a “nightmare” for Muthua residents and for drivers heading to Wamunyoro.

“This section of Muthua – Kiawarigi – Kabiru-ini road has been a nightmare. Watu wa Muthua wameteseka sana hapa, drivers going to Wamunyoro have suffered. Lakini that is a thing of the past now, we have done it, God is gracious, William Samoei Ruto Ubarikiwe sana. Wíra Warie. Mungu asifiwe sana,” Wamumbi wrote.

Wamumbi is an ally of President William Ruto and is expected to defend his seat on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. He is also a fierce critic of Gachagua, who held the Mathira seat from 2017 to 2022 and backed the MP’s bid to succeed him.

The two fell out in July 2024 after Wamumbi ordered bars in Karatina and other parts of Mathira to reopen. The bars had been shut during a crackdown on illicit brew in Mt Kenya that Gachagua, then Deputy President, was leading. Gachagua said he was not aware of any government decision to reopen them. Wamumbi said the bar owners were licensed and were not selling illicit brews.

Wamumbi ordered bar operators to reopen after Gachagua accused Interior Ministry officials of sabotaging the fight against illicit brews.

Gachagua has accused Wamumbi of being the first MP to sign his impeachment motion.

Wamumbi later voted for Gachagua’s ouster in October 2024, and some Mathira residents began collecting signatures to recall him. In April 2025, he told mourners in Kirinyaga that Mathira residents did not support Gachagua.

Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has urged voters to reject MP Wamumbi in the 2027 General Election.
