Just in; Olekina Criticises Old Politicians Who Are Supporting Gachagua, Makes An Honest Plea
Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has criticised political leaders for what he describes as misplaced admiration for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a statement shared on social media, Olekina argued that some veteran politicians were making a mistake by idolising Gachagua despite his impeachment.
He also took aim at City Lawyer Donald Kipkorir, saying even political novices were being drawn into what he termed a scandal.
The senator portrayed Gachagua as a controversial figure whose political conduct should not be celebrated.
He questioned the attention being given to the former deputy president, describing him as an unemployed senior citizen associated with repeated controversy.
Olekina’s remarks come amid continuing political debate surrounding Gachagua’s role in the opposition and his influence in the Mt Kenya region following his removal from office in October 2024.
The former deputy president has remained politically active, positioning himself as a critic of President William Ruto’s administration and seeking to maintain support among his base.
The comments reflect divisions among leaders over how Gachagua should be regarded in the political landscape. While some politicians have continued to associate with him or defend his positions, others have questioned his record and political activities.
Olekina called for the country to shift its attention from political personalities and focus on development priorities. He argued that Kenya needed a genuine broad based development agenda rather than continued engagement in political theatrics.
His statement is likely to attract reactions from Gachagua’s supporters, who view the former deputy president as an important voice in the opposition, as well as leaders who share Olekina’s criticism.
The exchange shows the growing political contest over political influence and the direction of Kenya’s opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
