Grief as Conjestina Achieng Dies Hours After Sitting First KCSE Paper

A family in Kanyaliech village, Karachuonyo Constituency, Homa Bay County, is mourning the death of a Form Four student shortly after sitting her first Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) paper.

Conjestina Achieng’, a candidate at Alaru Central Mixed Secondary School, reportedly suffered an asthma attack on Monday evening, November 2, the first KCSE examination day.

Her mother, Pamela Atieno, said the day began normally as the family prepared Achieng’ for her first KCSE papers.

Later, the school’s deputy headteacher called and asked the family to arrange medical care because her condition had worsened.

She was rushed to a private hospital, but she died before health workers could attend to her.

Achieng’s father said his daughter had complained of chest pains for some time. He had bought medication to ease the discomfort so that she could continue with her examinations.

Her class teacher, Austin Ochina, also said the student reported chest pains while at school, leading teachers to contact her family for urgent help.

The teacher described Achieng’ as a gentle, calm and disciplined learner who rarely caused trouble.

Throughout her four years at the school, she maintained a strong record of good conduct.

Her mother said Achieng’ was her only daughter among three children. She described her as a beloved child whose death has left a painful gap in the family.

The mother said she would deeply miss her daughter’s warm and charming personality.

Achieng’ will be remembered as a focused student whose dream of becoming a lawyer ended too soon.
