What a UDA Senator Told Sifuna After His Kwale Road Complaint That Got Kenyans Talking
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s account of a challenging road trip through Kwale County sparked an online conversation after his fellow senator, Aaron Cheruiyot, responded with a remark that attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans.
On Saturday, October 31, 2026, Sifuna, who was leading the Linda Mwananchi Movement’s tour of the Coast region, shared pictures showing a muddy and waterlogged road connecting Kinango to Kwale town.
Accompanying the images was a humorous Swahili caption in which the senator described the difficult journey as one of jumping over potholes and navigating water before eventually reaching their destination.
“Barabara kutoka Kinango kuelekea Kwale town ni kuruka vihunzi na maji…lakini tutafika tu Inshallah,” Sifuna wrote.
His post highlighted the road challenges facing motorists and residents in the area, with the affected routes serving communities travelling to schools, markets and health facilities.
However, it was Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot’s reaction that added another dimension to the discussion.
Responding to Sifuna’s post on X, the UDA senator wrote: “Tandika katiba upitie juu….”
Cheruiyot’s brief response quickly drew reactions, with some Kenyans questioning the meaning and appropriateness of bringing the Constitution into a conversation about poor road conditions.
One Kenyan criticised the response, arguing that an elected leader should not appear to belittle the country’s Constitution, even jokingly.
“This is an elected leader in the Republic of Kenya trashing and belittling the Kenyan Constitution,” the user remarked.
Another reaction read: “Tumekuwekea vizuri. We shall revisit.”
The exchange attracted attention because it brought together two issues that often feature in Kenya’s political conversations: the state of public infrastructure and the role of the Constitution in governance.
While Sifuna’s original post drew attention to the difficulties experienced by road users in Kwale, Cheruiyot’s response shifted part of the conversation towards political interpretation, leaving Kenyans debating what he meant by his remark.
