Ruto Announces Big Milestone On 3 Billion Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct That Promises To End Traffic Pain
President William Ruto has announced that the Kenyatta Avenue-Upper Hill Viaduct is now more than 50 per cent complete. The project is valued at Ksh3 billion.
In a statement shared on his social media accounts the Head of State said the works are moving towards the scheduled completion date in May 2027.
According to Ruto the project features a one-kilometre elevated dual carriageway. It is designed to improve connectivity between the Nairobi Central Business District and Upper Hill. Reinforced concrete piers will support the raised road structure.
The viaduct is expected to ease traffic congestion along the busy Kenyatta Avenue corridor. It will also give motorists an alternative route into and out of Upper Hill. The area hosts several major businesses and institutions.
Its completion is further expected to improve movement within the city centre and reduce pressure on existing roads during rush hours.
The update comes as the government continues to roll out major infrastructure projects aimed at addressing congestion in the capital.
The project was initially set for completion by December 2026. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority later revealed that it had been delayed by construction constraints. The authority said the structural works required for the flyover are highly complex.
It explained that installing columns and steel components demands precision engineering and phased execution.
The viaduct forms part of wider works that include the Valley Road-Kenyatta Avenue-Ngong-Nyerere Interchange and the Upper Hill-Haile Selassie Overpass.
Construction began in September 2020 but stalled for several years over payment disputes with contractors. Work resumed in July 2025.
