Heartwarming Reunion as Former 1990s Teammates Surprise Retired Footballer at Home

Robert Wairegi, retired Kenyan footballer was moved to tears after former teammates from the 1990s travelled to his home in Rongai, Kajiado County, to surprise him with a special visit.

Robert Wairegi, a former goalkeeper who turned out for clubs including City Stars, Highlands and Gitwamba, could hardly contain his emotions as the old friends reunited after years apart.

The former players travelled all the way from Naivasha to see him, bringing gifts that included a live sheep, a personalised football jersey and a cake.

The jersey carried Wairegi’s name and the number 001, making the gesture even more personal. The group also shared a meal and cut the cake together as they celebrated their friendship and years spent playing football.

Wairegi was visibly overwhelmed as he welcomed each visitor, embracing them one after another. He reportedly remembered the numbers his former teammates wore during their playing days, showing how much of their shared history he had kept in his heart.

The reunion brought back memories of their time on the pitch, when they represented different clubs and built friendships through their love for the game.

Wairegi said his football journey began around 1979 while he was still in secondary school. He later played for several teams, including Coca-Cola and Kenya Pipeline, before eventually retiring from active football.

Although his playing days are behind him, he has remained connected to the sport through mentoring younger players.

He explained that helping upcoming footballers was never about making money but about giving back to a game that had shaped much of his life.

The former goalkeeper said he had not expected his old teammates to organise such a visit, describing the gesture as something more valuable than financial gifts.

“This is more than any money I would receive,” he said.

“When I started mentoring the juniors I didn’t do it for money. I am glad my actions have touched several footballers and pray they continue doing great,” he added.

The visit highlighted the lasting friendships that can develop through sport, even long after players have left the field.

For Wairegi, the reunion was not simply about receiving gifts. It was an opportunity to reconnect with people who had shared important moments of his life and to see that the bonds formed decades ago had not faded.
