Kisumu Boxing League to Test Kenya’s Top Boxers Ahead of World Championships

The competition is expected to attract some of the country’s best boxers, who will be looking to impress coaches and secure places in the national team ahead of upcoming international assignments.

The tournament comes at an important time for Kenya’s boxing team, popularly known as the Hit Squad, following its impressive performance at the inaugural World Boxing Africa Boxing Championships held at Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi.

Kenya emerged overall winners of the continental competition, strengthening hopes that the country can maintain its winning form in international boxing.

According to head coach Musa Benjamin, the Kisumu competition will provide an important opportunity to assess the boxers, particularly the male athletes, as preparations for the World Championships gather pace.

Benjamin wants Kenyan male boxers to perform well and join their female counterparts in bringing more international honours to the country.

He said the Kisumu event would help the technical team identify athletes who are physically fit and capable of representing Kenya at the global competition.

The Elite Men’s World Boxing Championships are scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from November 25 to December 4, 2026.

The competition will therefore be an important test for boxers hoping to earn a place in the national squad. The Kisumu leg will run from Thursday to Saturday and is the fourth and penultimate round of this year’s National Boxing League.

Boxers from different clubs and institutions are expected to compete for honours while also fighting to attract the attention of national team selectors.

Kenya’s recent success in continental boxing has raised expectations among fans, who are hoping to see the country perform well on the international stage.

The Kisumu tournament will therefore offer athletes a chance to demonstrate their skills, determination and readiness for bigger challenges.

For the coaches, the competition will provide an opportunity to identify the strongest performers before Kenya heads to Turkey later this month.
