Ex-MP Wambugu Explains How Ndindi Nyoro Has Changed Mt Kenya Politics, Threatening DCP’s Dominance
Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has explained how Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and his People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) are challenging Rigathi Gachagua’s efforts to establish the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as the dominant political outfit in the Mount Kenya region.
Speaking in a video shared on his YouTube podcast on Sunday, November 1, Wambugu said Nyoro has forced the region to reconsider its political direction by introducing an alternative to DCP, which Gachagua has been seeking to consolidate as a regional political vehicle.
Wambugu argued that Nyoro’s biggest contribution is not necessarily the strength of his party but its ability to challenge the perception that all Mt Kenya politicians must belong to DCP to win elective positions.
“The power of the People’s Party of Kenya is not the party itself. It’s the fact that Ndindi has forced our region, Mount Kenya region, to accept multiparty politics,” he said.
The former lawmaker noted that Nyoro’s political move has opened a debate about whether all politicians in Mount Kenya should support Gachagua’s party to secure electoral victories.
He said the emergence of PPK has weakened the appeal of DCP as a single political outfit for the region, giving aspirants room to consider alternative parties.
Wambugu also criticised efforts to make Mount Kenya a one-party region, arguing that such an arrangement could allow party leaders to control nominations and intimidate politicians seeking elective positions.
He pointed to criticism directed at Nyoro by DCP figures, including Secretary-General John Methu and Senator Karungo Thang’wa, saying the disagreements reflects the growing political contest in the region.
According to Wambugu, multiparty politics will allow voters to assess candidates based on their leadership qualities rather than party affiliation.
He maintained that Nyoro has changed the political conversation in Mount Kenya by challenging the idea that DCP should be the only viable party.
Wambugu expressed hope that the region will embrace political competition ahead of the 2027 General Election, allowing voters to choose leaders based on their suitability for office rather than party loyalty.
