RIP: The Last Painful Call a Headteacher Received Before Finding His Wife Dead at Eldoret Mortuary
A Kakamega headteacher has painfully narrated how a series of worrying phone calls led him to discover his wife’s lifeless body at a mortuary in Eldoret after she perished in a road accident while travelling to a wedding in Nairobi.
Geoffrey Andabwa, a headteacher at a school in Malava, Kakamega County, lost his wife in a fatal accident along the Eldoret Nakuru Highway on Friday night. She was among six residents of Mateta village who died after a lorry crashed into two vehicles, a Toyota Noah and a Toyota Probox, at Coromat.
Three teachers were among the victims, while five of those who died were women.
According to Andabwa, his wife had left home in high spirits to attend a wedding in Nairobi alongside her colleagues.
The group had set off on Friday afternoon after completing their duties overseeing national examinations.
However, the journey took a tragic turn when the wedding hosts tried contacting the women but received no response.
They later reached out to Andabwa, asking whether he had communicated with his wife after failing to get through to her and the other invited guests. The situation became more distressing when he received additional calls informing him that the vehicle carrying his wife and her colleagues had been involved in a horrific crash.
He was further informed that the injured passengers had been rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
Andabwa immediately made his way to the hospital, hoping to find his wife among the survivors.
He first searched for her in the emergency department but could not locate her among the injured. He then headed to the mortuary to establish whether she was among those who had lost their lives.
Unfortunately, his worst fears were confirmed when he came across his wife’s body among the deceased.Overcome with grief, the headteacher broke down while recalling the painful experience, struggling to come to terms with the loss of his partner, who had left home alive just hours earlier.
The tragedy plunged several families and the entire Mateta village community into mourning.
The crash also brought back painful memories of another accident along the same highway, which claimed seven lives exactly three months earlier.
