How Alleged State House Meeting with Kakamega Women Flopped After Suspects Run With 1M For Transport
More than 200 women in Kakamega County have reportedly fallen victim to a suspected financial scam after being promised an opportunity to meet President William Ruto at State House in Nairobi.
According to reports by KTN News Kenya, police have arrested one suspect believed to be connected to the fraudulent operation, which allegedly targeted vulnerable women, including survivors of the 2007/2008 post-election violence.
The victims reportedly lost more than KSh 1 million after organisers convinced them that arrangements had been made for them to travel to Nairobi for a meeting with the Head of State. The women were allegedly told that the visit would provide an opportunity to interact with President Ruto and potentially receive recognition and support from the government.
Trusting the information provided by the organisers, each participant reportedly paid KSh 3,450 to cover transportation expenses. The money was collected from hundreds of women who believed that buses would be provided to transport them from Kakamega to Nairobi.
However, the promised journey never materialised. Despite making the required payments, the women reportedly waited in vain as the expected buses failed to arrive. They eventually realised that they had allegedly been deceived by individuals who collected their money under false promises.
Disappointed and angered by the incident, the affected women proceeded to Kakamega Police Station, where they reported the matter and appealed to authorities to help them recover their money and bring those responsible to justice.
Police have reportedly arrested one individual in connection with the case, while investigations are continuing to establish how the alleged fraud was organised and identify other people who may have participated in the scheme.
The incident has raised concerns about the growing exploitation of vulnerable members of society through fake political engagements and promises of access to influential government officials.
Authorities have continued to caution members of the public against making payments to individuals claiming to organise presidential meetings or government-sponsored activities without proper verification.
For the affected women, what was expected to be an opportunity to meet the President has instead become a painful financial experience. They are now hoping that investigations will lead to further arrests and possible recovery of the money they allegedly lost.
