CONFIRMED: Bayern Munich and Ajax to Bring First Teams to Kenya Not Reserve Sides, Sports PS Says

The government has confirmed that European football giants Bayern Munich and Ajax will bring their main teams to Kenya for their upcoming match at the Raila Odinga International Stadium.

Speaking on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi dismissed claims that the clubs would send reserve sides or former players, assuring Kenyan fans that the senior teams would feature in the highly anticipated encounter.

“We are bringing the main team, not the reserve team nor the legends,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing criticism of the friendly match, which is scheduled for January 5, 2027, as part of the official opening of the Raila Odinga International Stadium. Opposition figures and their supporters have questioned the decision to invite European clubs, arguing that local football teams should have been given the opportunity to play in the inaugural match instead.

They have maintained that featuring Kenyan clubs would have provided local players with a platform to showcase their talent while giving domestic football greater recognition.
