Nairobi Residents Brace For A Scorching November As Kenya Met Explains Why It Will Get Hotter
Temperatures in Nairobi, Kiambu and Murang’a will stay above average this November despite forecasts of increased rainfall. The Kenya Meteorological Department released the monthly outlook on Friday 30 October.
Mean temperatures in these counties will range between 20°C and 30°C. The coolest conditions are expected over the highlands where averages sit between 15°C and 20°C. The arid and semi-arid lowlands will be warmer with mean temperatures above 28°C.
Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Meru, Embu and Tharaka-Nithi will experience similar weather to Nairobi. Minimum temperatures across the country are forecast to range between 4°C and 20°C. This means some nights will feel hot while others turn extremely cold.
Nakuru will also be warmer than usual. Maximum temperatures there will range between 20°C and 30°C while minimums will fall between 8°C and 20°C.
Kajiado, Machakos and Mombasa could see temperatures climb as high as 35°C. Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta and inland parts of Tana River will record similar heat. Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu will have minimum temperatures between 20°C and 25°C.
The department said the southward movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone across East Africa will push temperatures up. Rising humidity and cloud cover linked to the rainy season will add to the effect.
Above-average rainfall is expected in Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru and dozens of other counties. The department warned that heavy rain could disrupt transport in urban areas where drainage systems may be overwhelmed. It also cautioned about flash floods, riverine flooding, landslides and damage to infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
