So Devastating! Ghanaian Teenager Shot Dead While Walking to School in New York City

A 15-year-old Ghanaian boy was shot and killed while going to school in the Bronx, New York City, on Thursday morning. Reports say he was chased before the deadly shooting.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said it received a report of a shooting near Crotona Park on Thursday morning. When officers arrived at about 9:24 a.m., they found the victim, identified as Javits Frimpong, suffering from a gunshot wound to his stomach.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors could not save his life.

Police have not arrested anyone in connection with the incident. Investigators are searching for three teenage boys believed to be linked to the shooting.

Security camera footage reportedly showed Javits running while someone dressed in black followed him. Other footage appeared to show masked people wearing dark clothes running away from the scene.

The incident has left residents of the Claremont area in the Bronx and members of the Ghanaian and wider West African communities in shock.

Javits’ father, Thomas Frimpong, expressed his deep pain over the loss of his son.

“I have lost him. I don’t know what to do now,” he told reporters on Thursday.

According to his father, Javits had arrived in the United States from Ghana just one year ago. He had joined his father to start a new life and continue his education.

Thomas described his son as a smart and quiet boy. He also claimed that Javits had been facing bullying at DreamYard Preparatory School.

His father said the school’s principal recently informed him that two students had been suspended for bullying and disturbing his son.

However, the NYPD has not confirmed whether the reported bullying had anything to do with the shooting. A police spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has condemned the killing and promised that efforts would be made to ensure justice.

In a statement released on Friday, he said the government would work to make sure those responsible for the teenager’s death face the law.

The Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective, a US-based organization, also expressed sadness over the incident.

The group said Javits had travelled from Ghana to the United States only a year ago to reunite with his father and build a better future.

It added that his family had moved to America with hopes of better opportunities, safety and a brighter future.

The organization said those dreams had now been destroyed by the tragic killing.

Police investigations are continuing as the search for the suspects remains ongoing.
