‘The curtain may have fallen, but your legacy remains’ – Ghana Actors Guild salutes Grace Nortey
The Ghana Actors Guild has paid tribute to Grace Nortey, saying the veteran actress belonged to the pioneering generation that built the foundation of Ghana’s acting industry. It used the occasion to call on the industry to care for its veterans while they are still alive.
The tribute came as Mrs Nortey, popularly known as Maame Gyata, was laid to rest on Saturday, October 31, after her death on August 26 at the age of 89.
“Her passing marks the end of an extraordinary artistic journey, but never the end of her story,” the Guild said. “Her legacy is woven into the very fabric of Ghanaian theatre, television, radio and film.”
The Guild said she was a pioneer whose talent, resilience and dedication helped shape the foundations upon which most of Ghanaian actors continue to build.
It recalled a career that spanned over five decades.
“At a time when the industry had limited opportunities and recognition, she and her generation persevered, laying the groundwork for the creative industry we celebrate today,” the Guild said.
It listed The Other Side of the Rich, Escape to Love, Matters of the Heart and Sinking Sands among her productions.
They expressed appreciation for her legacy.
“Dear Maame Gyata, the curtain may have fallen, but your legacy remains. Thank you for the stories you told, the generations you inspired and the foundation you have built. Your contribution to Ghanaian performing arts will forever remain part of our history.”
Ms Nortey received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Black Star International Film Festival in 2018. In 2020, she was honoured with a Legendary Award for Outstanding Contributions at the Ghana Actors Entertainment Awards.
